150,000 evacuated from path of trekking herd – BBC News

A herd of 14 elephants, who have made international headlines with their huge 500km (300-mile) trek across China, are finally on their way home.

State media say more than 25,000 police officers using vehicles and drones have monitored the herd, after the protected animals left a nature reserve in Yunnan about 17 months ago.

They’ve been through fields, towns and cities, eating millions of dollars worth of crops and damaging buildings, over the course of their journey and now, more than 150,000 people are being evacuated to make way for them.
