60,000 US prisoners face “psychological torture” of solitary confinement – BBC News

Prisons across the world have been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The cramped and crowded conditions make it hard to stop the spread of the disease.

In the United States, authorities have increasingly turned to solitary confinement as a way of limiting transmission, adding to the large number of inmates already held in isolation.

There are at least 60,000 prisoners in solitary confinement in the US and many of them have been held there for years.

Yet the United Nations considers more than 15 days in solitary confinement as a form of torture because of the psychological damage it can cause.
