Lithuania’s foreign minister and the EU’s top diplomat accused Belarus of using illegal migrants as a political weapon to put pressure on the European Union due to the bloc’s sanctions on Minsk.
It comes as the country voted in favour of strict new migration laws amid an influx of arrivals from Belarus. Politicians backed the controversial legislation on Tuesday, allowing the mass detention of migrants and limiting their right to appeal.
Hundreds of migrants have illegally crossed into Lithuania from Belarus in recent weeks.
