Billionaires: Are they part of the world’s inequality problem, or the solution? – BBC News

The Covid pandemic has made the world’s wealthiest far richer but has led to more people living in poverty, according to the charity Oxfam.

Forbes found that the 25 biggest billionaire givers in the US have over their lifetimes given away $169 billion to charitable causes, which has risen by about $20 billion since the end of 2020.

Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bernard Arnault are among those named as the world’s richest men according to Forbes figures cited by Oxfam.

At the same time those at the other end of the scale have been hit hard. A recent Oxfam report found that the pandemic led to 160 million more people living on less than $5.50 a day.

So what’s the most effective way for those at the top to help those at the bottom?
