California wildfires latest: 50,000 flee as blaze spreads with “zero containment” BBC News

The authorities in California are warning that devastating wildfires are continuing to spread despite the efforts of firefighters, with “zero per cent containment” of the flames.

They’ve warned that the fire department does not have enough resources to tackle the biggest wildfire ever seen in Los Angeles. Strong winds and a shortage of water are hampering efforts to control the flames.

Around 50,000 people have been told to leave their homes and move to safety as some of California’s most desirable neighbourhoods are reduced to ashes.

Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Emma Vardy and Justin Rowlatt.
