Calls for improved allergy training after death of girl, 13, after drinking hot chocolate | BBC News
The death of a 13-year-old girl after drinking a hot chocolate from a coffee shop in London should be a "wake up call" to all food companies, campaigners say.
Hannah Jacobs died of a hypersensitive anaphylactic reaction within hours of sipping the drink bought by her mother in February 2023 – despite making staff at the Costa Coffee aware of her daughter’s allergies.
An inquest found there had been a "failure of communication" between the coffee shop staff in Barking, east London, and Hannah’s mother Abimbola Duyile.
The parents of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse – who died in 2016 from an allergic reaction to a Pret a Manger baguette – and Hannah’s legal team have urged government action to protect people with food allergies.
