Can Democracy Survive the Era of Deepfakes? Insights from the Solaris Project

How do deepfakes impact our democratic processes, the information landscape, and political decision-making? This is one of the core questions behind Solaris, a European project launched three years ago to address the growing challenge of AI-generated content.

In this video, we dive deep into the project’s findings with experts who share insights on regulatory frameworks, ethical AI, and the psychology of why we believe in synthetic media:
• Federica Russo (Solaris Project Leader & Philosopher of Science): on how this interdisciplinary EU initiative studies the impact of deepfakes—even low-quality ones—on public opinion.
• Yasaman Yousefi (University of Bologna & DexAI): on policy recommendations and ethical AI.
• Angelo Tumminelli (Lumsa University): on the ethics of trust and reliability in the age of AI.
• Tommaso Tonello (Utrecht University): sharing results from experiments conducted within newsrooms.

Host: Alessio Jacona, curator of the AI Observatory at ANSA

Watch the full discussion to understand why "it takes a village to believe in a deepfake" and how we can prepare for the future of information and, from a broader perspective, for the future of democracy itself.
