Can Lula da Silva win the presidential election in Brazil again? – BBC News

Former Brazilian President Inácio Lula da Silva is rallying his supporters in the Amazon ahead of the first round of elections on October 2.

Lula da Silva’s opponent, President Jair Bolsonaro, has been criticized for the amount of deforestation in the Amazon since he took power in 2019.

Lula da Silva, once described as "the most popular politician on earth" by former US President Barack Obama, is hoping to regain power with the backing of those looking to preserve the rainforest and its ecosystem.

Lula da Silva led Brazil between 2003 and 2010. When he left office, he still held an approval rating of 80%, but his legacy was tainted by corruption scandals.
