Chicago braced for National Guard as Donald Trump vows crime crackdown | BBC News

The US city of Chicago is braced for the expected deployment of National Guard troops by President Donald Trump, due to what he has described as “out-of-control crime”. The President said the military would be “going in” following similar moves in Los Angeles and Washington.

Trump has said he plans to intervene in Chicago and Baltimore, claiming the cities are failing to deal with violent lawlessness. It follows the recent deployment of thousands of National Guard troops and federal agents in Washington DC. In June National Guard troops were sent to LA to protect immigration agents who were rounding up alleged illegal immigrants.

Chicago’s Democrat leadership is vowing to resist the move, challenging the President’s authority to deploy forces in their city. They say that Trump’s claim to be acting on crime is a front for another planned immigration crackdown.
