Climate change threat in Congo as vast carbon-rich peat slab faces development – BBC News

In central Africa a giant slab of carbon-rich peat land, discovered by a team of British and Congolese scientists, is under threat from oil companies and farming.

The carbon must be kept in the ground to avoid accelerating climate change, but some plots have already been sold for oil exploration.

The Republic of Congo is also planning to develop the land for agriculture, unless richer nations deliver more financial assistance.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Andrew Harding in Congo.
