Concerns over popularity of skin bleaching creams in Nigeria | BBC News

More than three quarters of people use skin-whitening or lightening creams, commonly known as bleaching creams in Nigeria.

It’s the country with the highest use in Africa, according to the World Health Organization. It’s even become more common for women to bleach their children’s skin.

The situation is so bad that Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control declared a state of emergency in 2023.

The BBC’s Madina Maishanu has visited Kano state, one of several major hubs for skin bleaching in the country.
