Croatia has become the latest country to adopt the euro as its currency, formally joining the eurozone as well as the Schengen area of free movement.
"This is a great achievement for Croatia," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. "A symbol of its deep-rooted attachment to the EU, and a symbolic moment for the euro area as a whole."
People in Croatia will be able to continue to use the Croatian Kuna as well as the euro, for a short transitional period over the next two weeks.
Croatia is the first country to join the Schengen zone in 11 years.
