Tributes have been paid around the world to Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union who has died aged 91.
Mr Gorbachev’s period in power saw reforms of the Communist bloc that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War and the eventual collapse of the USSR.
The economic chaos and hardship that followed may explain why the West’s admiration for Mr Gorbachev is not widely shared in his Russian homeland.
