Donald Trump tells Ukraine it’s losing war with Russia and must accept peace deal | BBC News

President Trump has said Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky has to start accepting that his country is losing its war with Russia.

Speaking in an interview he said Russia was much bigger and stronger than Ukraine and “at some point size will win”. He also criticised European leaders, calling them weak and saying they were not handling the war well.

Trump called on Ukraine to hold presidential elections, suggesting that without them its government was not democratic. Ukraine’s President Zelensky suggested he was considering changing the constitution to allow an election to take place while the country is under martial law.

In Moscow, the Russian President Vladimir Putin has been awarding medals to soldiers who’ve been fighting in Ukraine.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Sarah Smith in Washington, Jonathan Beale in Kyiv and Steve Rosenberg in Moscow.
