Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court | BBC News

Last year, US President Donald Trump placed taxes on goods imported into the country, saying it would boost American manufacturing.

But instead of getting Congressional approval, the Trump administration used emergency law, allowing them to issue immediate orders and bypass Congress.

In August 2025, a US appeals court ruled that most of Trump’s tariffs were illegal, but left them in place.

Now, the US Supreme Court has ruled that Trump exceeded his authority in imposing sweeping tariffs through a law reserved for a national emergency.
