First Hurricane Melissa deaths confirmed as Jamaican PM tells BBC about rescue efforts | BBC News

Four people are confirmed dead in Jamaica while at least 20 people have died in Haiti in flooding as a result of Hurricane Melissa.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness told the BBC he gives out a message of "hope to the Jamaican people" and says that the government will "be able to mount a creditable humanitarian and recovery response."

The true extent of Hurricane Melissa is still being revealed in Jamaica. Without power or phone coverage, much of the country is isolated and so information is trickling through.

As wind and rain lashed through the night, one local official said the destruction resembled "the scene of an apocalypse movie."
