From Mexico’s drug cartels to US streets – the deadly Fentanyl trade killing thousands | BBC News

President Trump says he’s imposing tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China in part because they’re failing to prevent the smuggling of the synthetic opioid fentanyl into the United States.

Fentanyl is used in medical settings for pain relief but when it’s abused the drug is deadly. Fentanyl killed more than 70,000 Americans in 2023 alone. Most of it is made in Mexico and smuggled across the border into the US.

Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Quentin Sommerville and camera-journalist Darren Conway.
