Former British senior diplomat Edward Chaplin was kidnapped in Iran in 1987, and relations between the UK and the Islamic Republic quickly deteriorated afterwards.
That kidnap followed claims by Iran that an Iranian consulate worker in Manchester was assaulted by British police.
Mr Chaplin sat down with Newsnight’s Joe Inwood and spoke publicly for the first time since he was seized and assaulted by revolutionary guards almost fifty years ago.
