How TikTok profits from Syrian children begging – BBC News

TikTok takes almost 70% of donations to Syrian families begging on livestreams on its app, BBC News has found.

Children from hundreds of displaced families in Syria are among those pleading for hours on TikTok for people around the world to give them digital gifts, which have cash value.

But BBC News has found the phones and TikTok accounts they’re using don’t belong to them.

A network of middlemen, from China to the Middle East, is pressuring these vulnerable families to go live – with little cash from the gifts being paid to the families.
