The International Monetary Fund has sharply cut its forecast of US economic growth due to President Trump’s trade tariffs. It says the US will face the biggest slowdown among advanced economies with a 40% chance of a recession.
The IMF says the tariffs policy will cause a “significant slowdown”, predicting US growth of 1.8% this year, down from its previous estimate of 2.7%. It’s the biggest growth downgrade among advanced economies. The IMF also slashed growth expectations for Canada, Japan, the UK, Germany, France and Italy.
The White House did not immediately respond to the IMF’s new forecasts. Instead press secretary Karoline Leavitt said there were 18 proposals for trade deals on the table, and plenty more discussions were taking place.
