Imran Khan supporters call off protest after crackdown in Pakistan | BBC News

Opposition supporters in Pakistan have temporarily called off protests demanding the release of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan.

Protesters had marched on Islamabad and vowed not to leave the capital city until Khan’s release – but his supporters were pushed back by police and met with tear gas.

Four security officers and two civilians died in the clashes and at least 500 people were arrested during the protests, which started on Sunday.

Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), said the protests had been "temporarily suspended" due to the "government’s brutality".
