The eastern Ukrainian town of Bakhmut has been the site of one of the longest and bloodiest conflicts of the war.
The ferocity and the length of the battle has cost many thousands of lives on both sides so far and left each desperately short of ammunition.
Yet the frontline town in the country’s Donbas region is said to be of little strategic value.
So why is the fighting continuing, and what are the consequences of defeat or victory likely to be?
