International community has failed Syrian earthquake victims, UN aid chief says

The United Nations has urged for an “immediate ceasefire” in Syria to facilitate aid to people impacted by Monday’s earthquake.

Martin Griffiths, the chief of the UN aid agency, said people in rebel-held parts of the country “rightly feel abandoned”.

Local agencies on the ground have said they haven’t received any foreign aid, as rescue missions shift to recovery and relief.

A White Helmets volunteer – Syria’s Civil Defence agency – said a “catastrophe at this scale could have been avoided if we’d had help earlier on.”
