Iran crackdown: Why there is a surge in executions | Global News Podcast

The United Nations has condemned a sweeping crackdown in Iran, warning that executions and mass arrests have surged during the war. Since the start of the US-Israel war on Iran, at least 21 people have been executed and more than 4,000 detained on national security charges, with many facing unfair trials and torture, according to the UN’s rights office OHCHR.

"I am appalled that – on top of the already severe impacts of the conflict – the rights of the Iranian people continue to be stripped from them by the authorities, in harsh and brutal ways," the UN human rights chief Volker Türk said, calling for an immediate end to capital punishment in Iran.

It comes after US President Donald Trump claimed that his intervention helped save eight women arrested in Iran from the death penalty. Iran responded by saying that none of the women Trump mentioned were ever facing execution and accused the president of fake reports.
