Iran Election: Polls open to elect new president | BBC News

Iranians are voting for a new president after the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash earlier this year.

The next presidential election was not due to take place until 2025, but the crash in May, which killed eight people, has led to the snap election being called.

Elections in the Islamic Republic are tightly-controlled affairs – the candidates are all vetted by an influential committee of clerics before they can stand.
