Is Georgia’s jailed ex-president a victim of the Kremlin? – BBC Newsnight

As we approach the anniversary later this month of the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Newsnight examines the impact of the conflict on some of the countries which border Russia.

In ex-Soviet Georgia, former president Mikheil Saakashvili was convicted of committing abuses of power while in office and has been in jail since he returned from exile in October 2021.

Questions are being raised about the role President Putin is playing in the former president’s situation, and the role Georgia might play in Putin’s geo-political aims.

The BBC’s Caucuses correspondent Rayhan Dimitqui looks at Russia’s reach.
