The Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on 7 October, with its fighters entering communities near the Gaza Strip, killing hundreds of people, and taking dozens of hostages.
The death toll in Israel from the Hamas attacks has reached 1,200 – while more than 1,100 people have been killed by Israeli air strikes on Gaza.
Gaza’s only power station has shut down, after Israel cut off electricity supplies as well as goods including medicines, food, fuel and water.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military says hundreds of thousands of troops are near Gaza "ready to execute the mission we have been given".
