Eighteen months since Omri Miran was taken hostage by Hamas, his wife Lishay still sends family updates, which she hopes he will read one day.
In Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, preparations are under way for a symbolic Passover Seder, or ritual feast. A long table was being set, with places for each of the remaining still in Gaza.
The Israeli military launched a campaign to destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. Of the 59 people still being held, 24 are believed to be alive.
More than 50,912 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.
