King Charles has paid tribute to Pope Francis, who has died aged 88.
In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, King Charles said that “his Holiness will be remembered for his compassion, his concern for the unity of the Church and for his tireless commitment to the common causes of all people of faith."
World leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, and Russia’s Vladimir Putin have also paid tribute.
Mourners are gathering in St Peter’s Square, where there is a sense of shock and sadness following news of the Pope’s death at 07:35 local time on Easter Monday.
