The authorities in Los Angeles warn that scammers and looters are taking advantage of victims of the wildfires that have devastated large parts of the city. One man is reported to have dressed as a firefighter in order to burgle a home and dozens of others have been arrested.
16 people are now known to have died in the fires with another 16 missing.
More strong winds are forecast but firefighters say they are making progress, with one major fire contained. Aircraft have now been brought in to help tackle the blazes as strong winds that have been fanning the flames have died down.
