Live debate: Banning social media for teenagers – what do you think? | BBC News

Governments around the world are wrestling with how to keep young people safe online.

In the UK, an outright ban on social media for under-16s is being considered – similar to the policy introduced in Australia at the beginning of the year.

At 4.30pm on Wednesday 22 April, BBC News is hosting a special live programme with 30 young people, aged between 12 and 18 years old to hear what they think about a possible ban.

The teenagers from Greater Manchester will speak directly about how the proposed ban could impact their lives, education, friendships, and online identity.

Co-hosted by BBC News’ Pria Rai, De-Graft Mensah, and Kirsty Grant, everything will be discussed from doom scrolling to disinformation, creativity to community, and they will hear from not only the young people in the room but also those joining the stream.
