Manchester synagogue killer pledged allegiance to Islamic State group in emergency call | BBC News

The man who attacked worshippers at a synagogue in the English city of Manchester made an emergency call to police during the atrocity to pledge his allegiance to the Islamic State group.

Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, was shot dead by police officers outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue during his car and knife attack, in which two Jewish men died.

Melvin Cravitz, 66, and 53-year-old Adrian Daulby were killed in the attack on 2 October. The UK’s Independent Office for Police Conduct has confirmed that Mr Daulby suffered a "single but fatal" gunshot wound after armed police officers responded to the incident. A police bullet also struck another man, Yoni Finlay, who is recovering in hospital after surgery. Two other men remain in hospital after sustaining serious injuries, including one who was stabbed in the neck and chest.

Al-Shamie made the emergency 999 call to police after driving into worshippers at the synagogue and hitting a wall, before attacking people with a knife, counterterrorism police officers revealed.

Police also confirmed that a suspected explosive belt Al-Shamie was wearing around his waist was a "hoax device" that had since been assessed and "found to be non-viable".
