Mass strikes in France bid to halt President Emmanuel Macron’s rise in pension age – BBC News

President Macron’s pension reform programme faces a make-or-break moment as French unions stage a day of mass strikes and protests on Thursday.

Protests are being held against plans to raise the retirement age in France from 62 to 64.

A series of nation-wide strikes forced the cancellation of most train services, many flights, and ferries. Many schools and other public services are shut.

Large demonstrations drawing tens of thousands are expected in Paris and other cities, where police will be out in force in case of violence from ultra-left "black bloc" infiltrators.
