The United Nations has described Haiti as being in a state of extreme violence and brutality.
In a recent briefing, it said almost 2,500 people had been killed between January and August of this year alone. Ongoing gang violence is partly being put down to political and economic instability.
Two years ago the country’s president was shot dead at his home – which led to much of the country’s territory falling out of government control.
