The scientist who investigates every maternal death in the UK has told Newsnight that pregnant women were an "afterthought" during the covid vaccine rollout, and that some of their deaths were preventable.

It’s a year since pregnant women were first advised to take up the jab, but SAGE’s Professor Marian Knight says life-saving messaging is still struggling to reach too many of them.

Professor Knight shared data with Newsnight Correspondent Anna Collinson showing that the vast majority of covid-related pregnancy deaths were from unvaccinated mothers.

A JCVI spokesperson said the Committee’s advice for pregnant women has “evolved over the course of the vaccine programme as evidence has accumulated” and would encourage any pregnant women who have not yet taken up the vaccine to come forward to do so.

This film was produced by Louis Harris-White and Adam Bowen.
