Donald Trump has called Israel’s strike in Qatar “unfortunate”. The US President said the attack, which aimed to kill Hamas leaders “does not advance the goals of either Israel or America.”
Hamas said six people had been killed in the bombing raid in Qatar’s capital Doha, including the son of its exiled Gaza chief, Khalil al-Hayya. It said its top leadership, including the negotiations team that had been considering the latest proposals for a ceasefire in Gaza, had all survived.
President Trump said the US was told of the Israeli action by the US military and had tried "to inform the Qataris of the impending attack”. However Qatar said it only learned of the airstrikes after they had taken place.
Qatar called the attack a “blatant violation of international law”. Its Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said his country "reserves the right" to respond to Israel’s "blatant attack". Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netahyahu said Israel had made clear there would be no hiding place for Hamas leaders.
