Makariv is a small settlement just outside the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and like many surrounding towns, felt the full force of the Russian offensive during the early stages of the war.

Now President Vladimir Putin’s soldiers have moved out to focus their efforts in the east of Ukraine, residents returning to the area are facing the reality of rebuilding from the wreckage left behind.
