The liberal mayor of Bucharest has won Romania’s presidential election after months of political turbulence.
Nicusor Dan, who is pro-EU, saw off a strong challenge from the nationalist candidate, George Simion, who won the first round earlier in May.
Before that, the previous election was cancelled because of allegations of Russian interference. Russia denied any involvement.
About 11.5 million Romanians voted in Sunday’s run-off, and Dan attracted the support of more than six million of them.
The former mathematics professor waited waited until after midnight on Sunday before he could be absolutely sure that the numbers were on his side, and he could join his supporters.
