WARNING: This video discusses violence and sexual assault.
A new investigation by the BBC has uncovered details about secret prisons in Russia and Russian-occupied Ukraine, where the torture and ill-treatment of civilians is "systematic and widespread" according to the United Nations. Former detainees have described beatings, mock executions and sexual violence. The allegations date back to 2014, when the Kremlin annexed Crimea and occupied territory in Donetsk and Luhansk.
We speak to reporter Tania Kharchenko. She has interviewed one Ukrainian woman, Liudmyla, who was seized off the street and sent to prison for three years.
The BBC tried to contact the men accused of carrying out abuses as guards at these prisons, but they did not respond. The Russian Embassy in the UK said Russia had "consistently advocated respect for international law and the rule of law" and allegations of crimes during the Ukraine conflict "are documented and investigated".
