The British prime minster is widely expected to announce that he is standing down, perhaps as soon as Monday.
Government insiders believe that Keir Starmer has concluded his position is no longer tenable, after a series of senior government colleagues urged him to set out a plan for his departure.
US President Donald Trump claimed in a social media post that Sir Keir was resigning, saying that he had “failed badly” but he wished him well.
It follows the victory of his rival Andy Burnham in the Makerfield by-election, paving the way for his return to parliament, and an expected leadership challenge if Sir Keir does not step aside. He will be sworn in as an MP on Monday.
Mr Burnham defeated Reform, Nigel Farage’s party, in the by-election, seen as the biggest threat to Labour at the next election. Burnham’s supporters say that he now has the backing of more than 200 Labour MPs. If that is the case, it means that Sir Keir no longer commands the support of a majority of members his own party in parliament.
