Sri Lankan authorities shouldn’t use ‘excessive force’ on protesters, UN warns – BBC News

The UN and Human rights groups have warned the authorities in Sri Lanka against using excessive force at largely peaceful protests.

The country has seen weeks of protests because of rising food prices and shortages of fuel.

There have also been power cuts, and a lack of medicines has brought the health system to the verge of collapse.

Police fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse crowds in the capital Colombo.

For weeks, the police have been accused of heavy handedness during protests, although authorities have said it is to restore order as tensions escalate.
