The Democratic Progressive Party’s William Lai has been chosen as Taiwan’s new president after his closest rival, the opposition Kuomintang, conceded defeat.
Lai has been labelled a “troublemaker” by China, which had warned people against voting for him because of his views on independence.
China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own. While it has called for "peaceful reunification", it has also not ruled out the use of force.
Lai said he was "determined to safeguard Taiwan from continuing threat and intimidation from China" and would maintain the cross-strait status quo.
