Terrifying final hours of Channel migrants tragedy – BBC News

20 of the 29 migrants who died in the English Channel in November have been identified as being Iraqi Kurdistan after an investigation.

The BBC has pieced together their final hours.

In freezing waters a group of men, women and children treaded water and held each other’s hands to stay afloat.

Some made desperate calls to rescuers on mobile phones held above the waves. But, as hypothermia set in, their devices slipped from their hands before they sent their location.

The dinghy in which they had hoped to reach British shores had a broken motor and deflated.
