From both radio and television studios, the BBC-Marconi Type A microphone carried song, era-defining speeches, and hundreds of languages to awaiting ears throughout the world.
Although it can be heard on hundreds of surviving recordings, each with their own incredible history, only a few models still exist today.
With the corporation’s 100th anniversary drawing closer, BBC sound engineer Joe Leates, with the help of singer Petula Clark, explores the legacy of a legendary microphone through which thousands spoke, and millions listened.
