The Philippines island standing up to Beijing in the South China Sea | BBC News

The Philippines-controlled island of Pagasa is at the centre of increasing tensions in the South China Sea.

Several countries are competing to lay claim to the region and the strategic sea lanes there.

China claims most of the South China Sea, where it has been building military bases and sending hundreds of ships to enforce its claims.

Few countries have challenged it, but the Philippines has – and the dispute between the two nations has been escalating, with frequent confrontations including vessels colliding and scuffles.
