The Israeli military has compared the surprise co-ordinated assault launched by Hamas on Saturday to the September 2001 attacks in the US.
"This is our 9/11 – they got us," said an Israeli spokesperson.
More than 700 people have been killed in Israel since Saturday and almost 500 people have died in Gaza.
