The trial of Derek Chauvin, the white American policeman accused of killing George Floyd in May 2020, has begun.
Video footage of Derek Chauvin kneeling on George Floyd’s neck was replayed the world over. He is one of four officers involved to stand trial.
To many, Floyd’s death while in police custody became a vivid symbol of police brutality – particularly against African-Americans – and it sparked worldwide demonstrations for racial justice.
The outcome of this case will be widely seen as a test of a judicial system that makes it difficult to hold police to account.
