20 years after the 9/11 terror attacks on America which killed nearly 3,000 people, legal proceedings against the man accused of masterminding them have resumed at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
It’s the 42nd court appearance for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four associates, presided over by the eighth judge, in pre-trial proceedings which have seen years of delays.
The controversial hearings, run by a military commission, will determine the key issue of what evidence will be admissible. Much of the evidence is likely to be heard in secret.
Defence lawyers and human rights organisations argue that much of the testimony is tainted because it was obtained using torture. They have said the men should face a civilian jury in the United States.
