Trump greets Putin with warm smiles and handshakes as they discuss peace in Ukraine | BBC News

The US and Russian Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are holding face-to-face talks in Alaska to try to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

The leaders arrived at Anchorage in Alaska, where President Trump clapped the Russian President’s arrival before the two men greeted each other on a red carpet with warmth, broad smiles and handshakes. It’s the first time they’ve met face-to-face since 2019.

In the run-up to the talks President Trump said his aim was to see a ceasefire in Ukraine rapidly and that he wouldn’t be happy if one wasn’t agreed at the talks. It’s not clear if Russia’s President Putin is prepared to stop the fighting. Russian drones carried out more attacks on Ukraine, hours before the talks began.

One person who is not in Alaska is Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, who wasn’t invited despite the fact that the talks are about the fate of his country, which Russia invaded three years ago.
