Donald Trump has threatened to "obliterate" Iran’s power plants, oil wells and “possibly” its water desalination plants, if a deal is not reached shortly.
The US President again insisted that “serious discussions” with Iran were under way and said “great progress” was being made, but warned that if a ceasefire is not agreed the US would destroy civilian infrastructure that on which millions of people depend.
Iran repeated its claims that no direct talks were taking place, and described US terms for an end to hostilities as “excessive and unreasonable”.
The price of oil has soared again, after reports that the US may be considering launching ground operations against Iran. There is speculation that US forces could attempt to seize Kharg island, the critical oil terminal which handles most of Iran’s energy exports.
